Human Skeleton and Senses

2nd february 2015

For his first week home schooling Harry decided that he wanted to find out about the human body. We thought that the best place to start would be to visit the Visit to the librarylibrary and take out some books. Harry really enjoyed his visit and spent a long period of time just sat at the desk reading the books. it was also fun for him to have his own card and scan the books out.

Once we hadHuman skeleton returned from the library I decided that a fund thing to do would be to cut out a full size skeleton. I managed to find a free resource online and cut it all out. Harry enjoyed putting the skeleton together and not always in the right place. After we had put the skeleton together we labelled all the bones with some labels I had printed off. So that we could remember which label went with which bone we colour coded the skeleton and labels. We then fixed the skeleton together with split pins. It is still hung on the side of our fridge today. I am hoping that one day we will have a home schooling room to ourselves and all our little projects can hang on the walls in there.

We spent the morning discussing about the 5 senses, we then accessed the kids health website and watched educational videos about the ears, eyes, tongue, skin and nose. The educational videos feature cartoons and are very educational whilst being entertaining. Harry did attempt some of the quizzes on the website but they were quite hard and aimed at older children.

Eureka Skeleton

After a week on the human body I decided it would be nice to finish the subject off with a visit to Eureka the national children’s museum. It has lots of interactive education exhibits. It has a section called all about me in which you have to fill in a passport with information about how far you can reach, how tall you are etc. The information can be saved onto their website and compared to the results from a different visit.
